Yesterday I mentioned New Year’s resolutions. One of my resolutions a few years ago was to “watch my steps” and make sure I walked a lot every day. I got a Fitbit that I still use. My goal is 10,000 steps a day. At first it was easy. My record was over 21,000 steps when I was visiting Barcelona two summers ago. Then I started taking fewer steps. It didn’t feel great. Now I see that 10,000 step goal as a way of staying disciplined and challenged. The steps can be a great habit and I am going to stick with them. I see them as my 10,000 steps with God. I don’t need the steps to be connected to God but they remind me of how disciplined I am and should continue to be in my walk with God. I take 10,000 steps with God each and every day and I do my best to keep up with His pace. The amazing thing is that He comes down to my level to pull me up to His level. One small step in the right direction is the promise of bigger steps in the future. I watch my steps with God and He leads every one of them. Today I want to encourage you to take your daily 10,000 steps with God. Let me explain what they can look like.
Our walk with God is not flawless and it is not always easy. Sometimes we walk fast, sometimes we slow down and sometimes we can’t walk anymore. A step with God is an expression of our spiritual walk with Him. He is Spirit and He wants us to adore Him in the spirit as well. What are those steps like? They are first and foremost the production of the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.* Every time we express those godly traits, we are taking a step with God. Taking 10,000 steps with God means walking in the Spirit. It indicates that we are cultivating the fruit and letting God’s Spirit dominate us and guide us. 10,000 is just a number but it is big number that underlines the importance of taking many steps each day with God, the importance of staying in the Spirit each day. We can be disciplined and stay focused on the Lord with every spiritual step we take.
Love is the first fruit of the Spirit which shows it is the most crucial one. It is love for God and love for others. Love for God implies talking to Him every day, praising Him and worshipping Him. Those are great steps we should be taking every day. If we want to have a fulfilling spiritual life, we ought to take love steps, prayer steps, praise steps, worship steps and thanksgiving steps all the time. They are the steps that will get us to places we never thought existed. They are the steps that will take us very far. They are the steps that keep our spiritual momentum going. They are the steps that make a difference on our spiritual Fitbit. My advice to you is to keep going and keep walking with God. Reach your 10,000 steps with Him every day. Ask Him for the strength and energy to keep going and to stay focused. God is going to take you places that will blow your mind.
