One of the strategies I give my students to help them understand the big picture in a text is to highlight keywords and key phrases. They read the text a few times and they use their highlighters to make some key elements stand out. It makes me think about how in life we need to get our highlighters and underline God’s key elements in our lives. We need to go over every part of our lives and highlight what God has done for us, what He is doing now and what He will do in the future. We spend too much time highlighting what the enemy has done to us and what he is doing to destroy our lives. Our minds are nests for that kind of thinking where we focus mainly on the bad highlights of our lives. I call our minds “nests” because of the things are birthed there. We give life to a lot of what we think about over and over again. If most of our thoughts are negative, we will start speaking negativity into our lives and we will feed doubt and fear. What we think is what we become. What we hear is what we believe and hearing ourselves speaking a lot of negativity will yield negative actions and events in our lives.
It is important that we use our highlighters wisely. Our highlighters will bring out things that we won’t forget easily. There is a nice visual that comes with highlights. We can picture in our minds what the yellow marks are. They stand out and they are what we focus on. When I scan my life and I highlight the goodness of God, that yellow highlight brings up a lot of joy. Reminiscing and remembering God’s highlights is a great boost to our faith. It’s what gives us the energy to continue at times because we know that if God did it once, He will do it again. God wants us to stay positive. He is the most positive One. He doesn’t have an ounce of negativity in Him and He wants to bring us into His circle of positivity. He wants for all of us to grow in faith and those highlights are a step in the right direction. When I see the kindness of God in my life, I can’t help but thank Him for everything and gratitude gives me hope. I don’t have to worry about tomorrow. I can’t change yesterday but I can rejoice today. Highlighting “God’s events” in our lives is a good reason to celebrate. We should be celebrating all the time!
Highlighting what matters in our lives gives us a clearer vision of the bigger picture. When we highlight all the wrong things, we lose sight of who God is and what He does. If what we talk about always highlights bad experiences and negative thoughts, we misrepresent God and we portray Him in the wrong light. We give a dark account of the God of lights. We lift up the enemy and we give him too much power. When we complain, we highlight our belief that God cannot help us and we nullify His power. Our words are big highlighters that should be handled carefully. Our actions are also highlighters that speak volumes. Decide to highlight good things in your life every day. Make a list and keep it where you can see it easily. Refer back to it when things are not going well. Let that list grow. Look at the details of your life and ask the Lord to show you the beauty in everything. Highlight God in your life and erase what the enemy is doing in your life. Your highlights are reminders that God is good, that He loves you and that He prevails!
