God is your refuge and strength

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1). Every time I read this verse; I get very excited. It is comforting and it is powerful. God is our refuge. Could we ask for a better refuge than Him? There is no better refuge but we get distracted and we get lost and we try to find refuge in all the wrong places. No one can provide a more solid and stable protection than the Lord. I love being reminded of that truth and I hold on to it with all my heart. A refuge is a secure place. It is a place where we are guarded and nothing bad can reach us. When we look for shelter outside of God, we find a place that is not firm and that won’t protect us for long. It is a temporary solution that can only satisfy for so long. Many places seem nice and trustworthy but they are cheap imitations of the Lord’s protection. Money can appear to be a refuge but it will never protect us from the attacks of the enemy. We can’t buy our way into a protection plan against the adversity. Today I want to reiterate how God is your refuge, your fortress and your strength. He is there to support you, to shield you and to bless you. As long as you stay in Him, you will be protected from life’s onslaught.

God is our refuge and that implies that we need protection from something or someone otherwise he wouldn’t be a refuge. Life with God doesn’t mean that we will not have trouble and that we won’t encounter difficulties. Life with God entails that when we are faced with tribulations, we have the shield that can get us through it all, that will cover us and that will set us free. The opposition will always try to penetrate our bubble of freedom but when we have the Refuge of all refuges, our bubble can’t be pierced. It can be poked and it can be tampered with but with the power of faith it won’t be destroyed. It is important to let the Lord be our refuge around us in faith. Every day we should be feeding that faith and thanking the Lord for His protection. When I pray, I thank the Lord that I am protected and loved. It makes a huge difference in the way I approach life. I have every confidence that God is the fortress that will stand the test of time.

I couldn’t survive in this life in my own strength. I am encouraged every time I remember that I don’t have to do all of this on my own. God is my strength. I am not my own strength. He is the power behind my confessions, my declarations and my prayers. Without Him I am nothing. With Him I can do everything.  He is an ever-present help in time of trouble. He doesn’t leave me. He doesn’t go away when life gets tough. When I let my praises be louder than my fears, the Lord shows up in a major way and He squashes doubt and worry. He is ever-present so I don’t have to worry about how I am going to get through the day. He makes my day an event of joy and peace because He holds my day in the palm of His hand. He holds me as well and He is around me all the time. The walls around me are not walls of lamentations but they are walls of protection. I built up those walls with faith. God put them up and I keep them there through my trust in Him. Don’t forget that the Lord is your refuge all the time. Don’t worry about what might come your way, God will get in the way of what tries to ruin you. With Him as your refuge, you can’t fail! God is your refuge, your strength, an ever-present help in trouble!
