How to defeat discouragement

Discouragement slips into everyone’s heart at some point but there is a spirit of courage that can transcend all downheartedness. The Lord didn’t give us a spirit of fear but a spirit of courage. Now it happens that we often have to unearth that spirit and let it rise against our circumstances. It is there. God gave it to you and to me. Reviving it can be crucial. Maintaining it is primordial. The Lord has put a powerful and courageous spirit in us and it is time we reminded ourselves of that great truth. Don’t give up. Don’t give in to fear. Give in to the power of the Lord. Be dependent on it. Expect it. Expect it to fuel your spirit and help you put that tremendous power into gear when needed. Hope is a powerful tool that the Lord has given us and it comes with courage and zeal. Today I want to encourage you to tap into the power of hope and wake up the spirit of courage in you. Don’t let the adversity take advantage of you and tell you that you should give up. Things might not be looking good at this point but it doesn’t mean they will not improve. With Jesus on your side they are bound to improve. Sometimes you must reach for that hope and let it rule you so you can walk all over discouragement. You have it in you, friend. The spirit of courage is talking to you on the inside. Listen to it and let it come alive in the name of Jesus.

As a kid, one of my favorite scriptures was 2 Timothy 1:7. It says that God didn’t give us a spirit of fear but of power, of love and of instruction. You see how God puts power, love and instruction or knowledge together? They are the opposites of fear. They help us conquer fear. That spirit of power in you can tear down all fear and discouragement.  Your spirit is connected to the Holy Spirit now that you are saved and it is key to keep that connection strong. When you do, you can easily flow with love, power and knowledge. If you let fear take over, the spirit of power and courage will be minimized. Give fear as a staple food to your spirit and the spirit of power will be starved. Feed your spirit of courage and you will be able to defeat fear and all the agents of the enemy. Maximize love, power and knowledge. Don’t take them for granted. Love is God’s foundation. Everything good that is happening in your life is because of love. Your salvation comes from that beautiful love of the Lord. Love is the language His Spirit knows fluently. Let Him speak love through you and you will have a spirit that is grounded in pure power. Love conquered death. It can conquer anything and it can definitely conquer fear and discouragement. You can win the battle against discouragement. You have the power in you to do it. It is the Lord’s power so you can rely on it anytime.

The next time you want to give up and you are discouraged, talk to yourself. Let your spirit of courage do all the talking. Say that you don’t have a spirit of fear but of power, of love and of instruction. Repeat it many times. Talk about how the Lord in you is greater than the enemy against you. Let that discouragement hear your declarations and blast its ears with hope. Hope is a destroyer. It destroys the plans of the enemy that get stuck in our heads. It destroys the thoughts that try to derail our faith. It destroys the feelings of defeat and it builds up the knowledge that you are going to make it. Keep your hope in the Lord and your spirit will shine with power that removes all fear. You can’t make it alone but you can make it with the Lord for sure. Remember that you don’t have a spirit of fear. When fear attacks you, don’t accept it as being a part of you. We tend to believe that the spirit of fear is a natural part of who we are. It is part of who we used to be but it is no longer who we are. Part of renewing our minds as new creatures in Christ is to believe that we indeed have a spirit of power and courage. My prayer is that you are completely aware of the spirit of power that lives in you. Stay strong in Jesus’ name!
