I try my best to see what God wants me to do. I try to understand and to accept what God wants me to accomplish. What does God want you and me to do every day? The answer is in His Word and in the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads by example and He finds His inspiration in God’s Word. Whatever the Spirit whispers to us, whatever He tells us in prayer is in agreement with the Word of God. It might not make sense to us but it is clear to God and if we are willing to cooperate with the Spirit of God, we will do God’s will. Collaboration with God’s Word and with His Spirit leads to actualization of God’s will. One thing I have been working on is to live in humility. God desires for us to be humble. He says it in His Word and His Spirit talks to us about it when we have ears to hear Him. The whole hearing and listening part takes practice and it is extremely helpful. Living a humble life is living a life where we put others before us. It’s living out love. It’s giving without expecting to receive. It’s blessing others and praying for others. I strongly believe that it is what the Lord is trying to show us every day. He pulls on the strings of our hearts so love can be what directs the steps of our hearts. Today I want to encourage you to ask God to show you what He wants you to do. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart. Ask Him to open the ears of your spirit. Ask God and He will show you.
There are so many things we can miss when we are not paying attention. Have you ever had someone ask you if you had just seen something that happened and you realized that you totally missed it? We pay more attention to certain details. We are more inclined to see what we are trained to see. Our minds have a repeat mechanism that allows us to see patterns and to always look for things that we are familiar with. It’s the unfamiliar and the unexpected that we have a hard time seeing. My point is that we ought to be familiar with the Word of God in order to recognize the signs, the wonders of God and the leading of the Spirit. It is hard to be led toward something we don’t know. It is also hard to accept guidance from someone we don’t know. Daily prayer helps us know God better. Daily Bible study does that as well. When I pray in the morning, I ask the Lord to teach me. I ask Him to enlighten me and to guide my steps so I can walk the way He wants me to walk that day. Those steps take me to where He has planned for me to be. I ask God to show me the way to love, to peace and to joy. I ask Him to put others on my heart so I don’t fill it up with me, myself and I.
Asking God to show you what to do is an act of faith or at least it should be. The Bible tells us to ask and we shall receive and we should ask in faith. I ask the Lord with my mustard seed in my hand. There are times when faith looks more like a jar of mustard than a seed and I cherish those moments but even a little bit of faith is enough. Ask God to show you how to walk in love. I think that is an immensely powerful request. It goes back to what I was talking about when I mentioned humility. God can show us anything and it is up to us to be open to His guidance. After I ask the Lord, I thank Him for what He is going to show me and I expect Him to guide me. I ask Him more and more how I can be a blessing today. I ask Him how I can make someone’s day. There is power in our words and God often shows me how to be a blessing to someone through my words. I could be at a store and He shows me that I should say something nice and encouraging to a cashier for instance. He also shows me that I should contact someone and give him or her some encouragement. God always shows us to do everything with love.
Asking God to show you what to do comes down to asking Him to show you how to be more like Him and how to lead a life that pleases Him. We can also ask Him to show us what to do in a specific situation. When we are not sure where to turn or where to go, we can ask Him and He will give us a sign, He will speak to our hearts, He will send someone or He will point us in the right direction by whichever means He chooses. Ask God and He will show you the wonders of His heart by encouraging your heart to be more like His. Ask God and He will show you that nothing can stop Him. Ask God and He will show you that hope is always around. Ask God and He will show you how much you can bless the world around you. Ask God and He will show you how to walk and where to walk. Ask God and He will show you that He died for you and every day is a reminder of His amazing sacrifice for you. Ask God and He will show you exactly what you need to see today!
